Nuremberg is the economic and cultural center of an European Metropolitan Region with 3.5 million inhabitants and 1,790,000 jobs.
The working population of about 363,000 people is employed by about 23,000 companies and institutions in the city area alone. The entire conurbation of Central Frankonia has a working population of about 909,000 persons.
Highly qualified recruits on the regional labor market and practical research and science are important motors for the special innovative power and future orientation of the Nuremberg region. The complete spectrum of schools, training institutions, the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen and Nuremberg, the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences and the Protestant University College train young people to a high standard. Some 90,000 students attend 18 universities in the Metropolitan Region, including 35,000 in the conurbation.
Research is conducted with gusto at numerous research institutes and laboratories in the region to make life easier for all: they include the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits or the Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Systems and Device Technology , the Development Center for X-Ray Technology and the Federal Institute for Employment Research. There are many more examples of research ranging from computer tomography to biocompatible materials used in medical technology.
