With the Nuremberg Reichswald (Imperial Forest), one of Germany's largest forest areas in the vicinity of a city, and the near-natural banks of the River Pegnitz which form a green belt right through the city, Nuremberg's environment has very good natural starting conditions.
Nuremberg's environmental activities are characterised by the major commitment of its citizens. The Nuremberg Agenda 21 has hundreds of volunteers working in 40 different project groups, dealing with topics such as ecological town planning or environment and economy.
The City implemented further programmes, attempting to promote energy-saving through insulation, environment-friendly energy generation, sustainable management in companies, and a switch to public transport.
Health care is well provided for: with a number of preventive measures and a preventive care network, and – if a disease occurs – with relevant care in Nuremberg's hospitals. The Klinikum Nürnberg with more than 2,400 beds, is Germany's largest municipal hospital.
