City Park

In 1861, the Maxfeld area in northern Nuremberg was the venue for Germany's first Sängerfest (singers' festival), and in 1892, on the occasion of the first Bavarian State Exhibition of Trade, Craft, Industry and Arts, a park was created here. After the exhibition buildings had been demolished, the area was officially converted into the City Park. To this day, the Schiller Memorial (1909) and the two marble vases placed here in 1892 and 1912 to commemorate the singers' festivals, still show that the park also served as a "Memorial Park" during the time of the Empire. In 1905, the 12 ha park was extended further to the north. With its area of 19 ha it then was the largest park and green space in northern Nuremberg, until in 1973 Marienberg Leisure Park was opened.
