During the Middle Ages, St. Catherine's Church was part of a Dominican convent. After the Reformation, the building was used for profane purposes, and between 1620 and 1778 was the home of the Nuremberg Mastersingers. In 1945, the church was completely gutted by fire, and never reconstructed.
60 years after the destructive air raid, St. Catherine's Ruin has a new roof. Even if only in the places where it is most needed, above the former altar space where now musicians and their instruments will be protected from the rain. For the spectators, the summer series of events in the ruin will remain an open air event. Between June and September, St. Catherine's Open Air offers top acts from jazz and world music.
