1. FC Nürnberg – the "Club"

The 1. FC Nürnberg is one of the most traditional football clubs in the Federal League and in German Football in general – and it is no coincidence that it is referred to by the very simple name of "Club": when the 1.FCN won its first five championship titles between 1920 and 1927, the language of football in Germany was still very British. So football fans simply called the most successful football team, which then was the 1.FCN, by its English name "Club".
The club has kept this tradition going up until today, though the last championship was won way back in 1968. Seven times relegated and re-promoted, the club also holds the record for promotion to the First Football League. The FCN is the only German team to win the German Championship (1968) and the DFB Cub (2007), and then to be relegated to the Second League in the following year.
But eyes are again firmly directed to the future after the Club's immediate re-promotion to the First League in 2009. The successful team leaders, manager Martin Bader and coach Michael Oenning, intend to give the club a more stable basis with the young team which was promoted to the First League. After 15 years, the Club's president, Michael A. Roth, stepped down in summer 2009, to give a further clear signal of a new beginning after the re-promotion.
It is particularly because of its long tradition, that the "Club" can rely on a large and loyal group of fans. Up to 47,000 people fans watch the club's Federal League home matches played in the easyCredit-Stadion, and often up to 5,000, 6,000 or more fans accompany the team to away games in other Federal League stadiums. They will celebrate their current stars, such as Argentinian defender, Javier Pinola, Marek Mintal, 2009 top goal scorer in the Second League, captain Raphael Schäfer and the "young guns", such as Dominic Maroh, Dennis Dieckmeier and Mike Frantz.
But the fans also know and honour the names of great "Glubberer" (club players) of the past. The name of Max Morlock is representative for many of them: Morlock played more than 900 matches for the 1.FCN – and in the legendary final of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland scored the important 1:2 against Hungary, enabling Germany to catch up, and triggering one of the biggest sensations in the history of world football.
