(Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra)

Second only to the Bavarian State Orchestra, the Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra is Bavaria's biggest opera orchestra. Their main field of action is the Opera House of Nuremberg State Theatre. 86 musicians play in the orchestra pit for about 20 different dramatic musical productions per seasons. In addition, the orchestra performs regularly in its "Philharmonic Concerts" series held in Meistersingerhalle and in the Opera House, and has started a successful chamber music series. In 1981, the Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded the top grade "A" in the ranking of German orchestras.

The orchestra has always rendered outstanding services to the performance of new compositions and has premiered numerous works, both in concert and on the operatic stage. The Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra has worked with many renowned conductors and soloists. Since 1999, the orchestra have performed in Europe's biggest classic open air concerts in the Nuremberg Luitpold Grove. Recent tours brought the orchestra to Salzburg, Nice and to the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

In the 1998/99 season, Philippe Auguin took over as the orchestra's musical director. Conducted by him, the orchestra performed the first complete Wagner Ring Cycle in Nuremberg after nearly 50 years. The orchestra also took the Ring Cycle to the Beijing Music Festival in autumn 2005, to the first performance of Wagner's main work in Asia (outside Japan). Since 2006, Christof Prick has been the musical director of the Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra.
