Red, the Club colour, is the dominant colour in the Grundig Stadion, whenever the legendary "Club", the 1. FCN, is cheered by its fans in one of its home matches. In 2009, after just one year in the Second League, the 1. FC Nürnberg, holding the record for relegations and promotions, has returned to the "upper house" of football. With their new sponsor, Thomas Sabo, the Ice Tigers playing in the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung, are aiming to reach the ice hockey play-offs. Because of financial difficulties, the women's handball team of the 1. FCN who had been successful for years, had to file for insolvency and in 2009 will start rebuilding in the Bavarian Regional League. Nuremberg remains a stronghold of hockey: women's and men's teams of the NHTC or the HG are represented in the First Division both in field and indoor hockey.
Professional cycling teams pedal around the Old Town at high speed during the annual international cycle race. The Ladies, among them the Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung, the best-known professional German cycling team, even compete for Word Cup point here. Even higher speeds are reached during the Norisring Race, the only city race course of the German Touring Car Championships.
Apart from all those major sports events, numerous sports clubs determine the city's sporting scene. They offer sports facilities of all kinds for people of all ages and abilities, led by the Postsport-Verein, Germany's biggest popular sports club with its 14.000 members and 21 sections. Individualists can make good use of the landscape in and around Nuremberg with its sports grounds, parks, forests and lakes for their sporting and leisure activities.
