The 1993 "Grammy Awards" in Los Angeles caused quite a stir. Besides Michael Jackson and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra was honoured for their recording of the title melody for the TV Series "Beauty and the Beast" in the category "Best Pop Instrumental Performance". In those days, the orchestra's name went through the international press. The "Hollywood Connection" of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra by then had been going strong for over forty years, though. Since the early fifties, the Symphony Orchestra has recorded soundtracks for the Americans: in 1953 the film music for "Quo Vadis" and in 1959 the music for "Ben Hur", for example.
But in spite of all this, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra are first and foremost a concert orchestra with a mainly classical repertoire. Their very varied subscription concerts performed in Meistersingerhalle cater for about 3000 regulars. During the summer's open air season, there are also their popular concerts in the Serenadenhof and the Classic Open Air in Luitpold Grove, with tens of thousands of enthusiastic listeners. In addition to this, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra also perform oratorios all over Franconia and are the "Orchestra in Residence" of the Heidenheim Opera Festival and partners for orchestral recordings made by Bavarian Radio.
