The 1. FCN made glorious football history. For decades it was celebrated as the team with most German championships. After an exciting year in the Second League, the club won its relegation matches against Energie Cottbus and has returned to the Premier League for the 2009/2010 season.

Nuremberg's two hockey clubs, the NHTC and the HGN, have both been celebrating successes and have established themselves in the top tier of German hockey. In 2008, the NHTC defender, Max Müller, won Olympic gold in Beijing with the German field hockey team, and HGN's Hannah Krüger won the European Championships with the German U21 team.

In 2009, the sporty flights of the FCN women's handball team came to an end, when the club had to file for insolvency. Thirteen times German champions and several times German cup winners in women's handball, the team will now have to be rebuilt, starting in the Bavarian regional handball league.
