As one of twelve host cities of the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup™ from 9 June to 9 July, 2006, Nuremberg enjoyed world attention. Five matches of this sports event, the world's most important next to the Olympic Games, were played in the city's modernised Franken-Stadion.
With smooth organisation, peaceful and exuberant fans celebrating and wonderful summer weather, the World Cup in Nuremberg was just one wonderful party. According to Lord Mayor, Dr. Ulrich Maly, Nuremberg's open-minded and friendly citizens made a major contribution to this fantastic mood: "They were real World Champion hosts! And they got happier in their role as hosts every day", said Dr. Maly. But the municipal support programme, including culture, sports, family activities and plenty of partying, headed by the motto "Nuremberg Kicks", was also a major factor, providing a wonderful frame for this celebration of football.
Earlier on, in June 2005, the Confederations Cup had already presented Franconian football fans with three high class matches right here on their doorstep.
