Nuremberg/Erlangen - selected as "Digital Hub" site
The fundamental idea of the Digital Hub Initiative is to ensure that cooperation among start-ups, established companies and science works particularly well in a small, confined area in the digital age, whilst also promoting innovation. A total of 12 digital hubs have now been selected as part of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy’s Digital Hub Initiative. The national initiative seeks to build upon existing strengths. These hubs serve to link up young start-ups with established businesses and excellent research institutes so they can develop innovative digital solutions together.
The federal government has set out a range of criteria for the selection of the hubs. These include local operations of global industry leaders, a start-up community with the beginnings of a network and excellent research and education clusters. Therefore Nürnberg/Erlangen has been selected as the official e-health hub. In the Medical Valley EMN (Europäische Metropolregion Nürnberg = European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg) are more than 500 active companies in medical technology and more than 80 research institutions. The Medical Valley EMN is one of the strongest, most active medical technology research clusters in the world. Renowned partners from industry, research, healthcare and politics have come together to form this interdisciplinary network.
The hubs are to act as digital ecosystems with international resources. The leading edge cluster Medical Valley European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg (EMN) is together with Zollhof, which is a Tech Incubator for tech startups and digital innovators based in Nuremberg, responsible for the hub management.
