The industrial sector in Nuremberg

Engine production

Energy

Electrical engineering

Nuremberg has developed into a high-tech region on the basis of its rich industrial tradition in electrical, mechanical and automotive engineering. Many products and problem solutions in the fields of communications, transport, energy technology, control & instrumentation, electronic components, entertainment electronics, automation engineering, and production technology come from Nuremberg.

Industrial culture

The capital goods branches dominate in terms of the number of jobs and turnover figures. In comparison with the German average, the high-technology sector with the key branches of electrical engineering and communication technology is represented at an above-average level in Nuremberg, as is the printing industry.

Embedded systems and broadband communication systems are key technologies in the information and communication technology sector. Nuremberg also offers definite location advantages in the fields of automation engineering, production technology, automotive engineering and automotive electronics. Components for the Ariane rockets are produced here, as is ICE technology. Without parts from the Nuremberg region, hardly any car in the world would be able to move. Large sedan cars like the BMW 7 series owe their driving comfort and safety to a large extent to high-tech automotive electronic products from Nuremberg. Whether engines, carburetor systems, pistons, ball bearings, cables, electric windows, airbags or radios: apart from the body and tires, there is hardly a car part that is not produced in the Nuremberg region. 250 automotive component suppliers are based here and about 40 percent of all urban and regional trains use equipment from Nuremberg and the region. The location ensures mobility throughout the world.

Nuremberg is also one of Europe’s leading printing locations. Over 50 million magazines a month are produced here. The best-known brand manufacturers in the writing equipment industry have their headquarters in the Nuremberg region.

Nuremberg’s main industries

Industrial employees

The number of industrial employees in Nuremberg is stagnating and continuously dropped over the previous years. The decline in employment should not be interpreted as a “dying out” of the industrial sector, however. On the contrary, the growth sectors of the service sector are closely linked with the production sector. Especially the services for companies profit from the demand from the producers. On the other hand, they develop new problem solutions, which in turn improve their efficiency and competitiveness. For rationalization reasons, industrial companies increasingly outsource services to external service providers that they used to provide themselves (e.g. planning, marketing, service, etc.).

Industrial production

The majority of today’s industrial production in Nuremberg is know-how-intensive finishing. The international competitiveness of the industry is very high. 35% of all industrial products from Nuremberg are sold on international markets. International turnover is more than 50 % in the key branches of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, toys and writing equipment.
