European Elections 2024: Voting in Nuremberg

Who is eligible to vote?

In Germany you are eligible to vote if you

  • hold German or another EU citizenship,
  • are 16 years of age or older,
  • are resident in Germany and have also resided in the EU for at least three months and
  • are not excluded from the right to vote (e.g. by a court ruling).

Furthermore, you have to be entered in the voters’ register. The municipality in which you have your main place of residence or last had it before moving abroad is responsible for questions regarding the right to vote in the European elections.

Germans with residence in Nuremberg

If you are registered with your main residence in Nuremberg by April 28 2024, you are automatically registered to on the voters‘ register. You will then receive your voter's notification by mail until May 19 2024 at the latest.

Germans residing in another EU country

Do you live in another EU country (i.e. one of the other 26 EU member states such as Bulgaria, Greece, Romania or Spain) and are not currently registered as a resident in Germany? For the European elections you can then decide whether you would like to vote in Germany or in the EU country of your residence. However, you may vote in one country only.

- Voting in another EU country: As regulations on how to vote in the European elections differ from member state to member state, please turn to your local authority in order to learn about the process in your country of residence.

- Voting in Germany: You must be registered on the voters‘ register. In case Nuremberg was your main residence before moving abroad, you can apply to register on the voters‘ register at the electoral office of the City of Nuremberg. Please send the signed application form below by mail to the Nuremberg Electoral Office by May 19 2024:

Germans residing outside the EU

Do you live in a country outside the EU and are not registered as a resident in Germany? Then you can vote in the European elections if you meet one of the following two criteria:

- You have lived in Germany for at least three months without interruption after reaching the age of 14 (i.e. from the day of your 14th birthday) and this stay was not longer than 25 years ago?

- You have become familiar with the political situation in Germany and are affected by it. Please read the information sheet in the application form to see whether you meet this condition.

You must then register on the voters‘ register. If Nuremberg was your primary residence before moving abroad, you can apply to register on the voters‘ register at the electoral office of the City of Nuremberg. Please send the signed application form below by mail to the Nuremberg Electoral Office by May 19 2024:

You will then receive your voting documents by mail.

EU citizens residing in Nuremberg

Are you a citizen of one of the other 26 EU member states (e.g. Bulgaria, Greece, Romania or Spain) and are currently living in Nuremberg? For the European elections you can then decide whether you would like to vote in Germany or in the EU country of which you are a national. However, you may vote in one country only.

- Voting in Germany: You must be registered on the voters‘ register of the City of Nuremberg.

If you have registered in the voters' register for a European election since 1999, have not moved abroad in the meantime and have registered your main place of residence in Nuremberg by the deadline of April 28, 2024, you will automatically receive your voter's notification by post by May 19, 2024 at the latest.

If you have not yet been entered in the voters’ register, you must apply to the electoral office of the City of Nuremberg. You must send the application by mail to the Nuremberg Electoral Office by May 19, 2024 at the latest and it must be signed personally and by hand.

How can you vote?

You can vote at the polling station on June 9, 2024 or by mail. In order to vote by mail you have to apply for a polling card. You can find further information at the Electoral Office’s website shortly.
