Berufsmäßige Stadträtin und Referentin für Umwelt und Gesundheit
Britta Walthelm, geboren 1980 in Nürnberg, ist in ihrer Heimatstadt aufgewachsen und zur Schule gegangen. Nach dem Abitur am Willstätter Gymnasium studierte sie an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Politikwissenschaft und Volkswirtschaftslehre. An der University of Manchester erlangte sie den Abschluss Master of Arts in den Fächern European Politics and Policy erlangte. 2007 beendete sie ihr Studium an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg als Diplom-Politologin Univ.
Seit Mai 2020 ist Britta Walthelm berufsmäßige Stadträtin und Referentin für Umwelt und Gesundheit der Stadt Nürnberg. In der aktuellen Legislaturperiode des Stadtrats legte Britta Walthelm die Schwerpunkte ihrer Arbeit sowohl auf die Umsetzung von Klimaschutzmaßnahmen und die Klimaneutralität der Stadtverwaltung, wie auch die Gestaltung von Grün in der Stadt im Hinblick auf die Klimaanpassung und den Erhalt der biologischen Vielfalt. Ihr Augenmerk richtete sie auf die Stärkung des kommunalen Gesundheitswesens. In ihrem Geschäftsbereich ist sie zuständig für die Themenfelder des Umwelt- und des Gesundheitsamts, des städtischen Abfallwirtschaftsbetriebs, der Stadtentwässerung und der Friedhofsverwaltung.
Nach der Bewältigung der Folgen der Coronapandemie bis weit ins Jahr 2022 hinein konnte Britta Walthelm wegweisende Beschlüsse im Bereich Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung erwirken. Das ist etwa ein integriertes Klimaschutzkonzept (2025), um das Ziel der Klimaneutralität der gesamten Stadt bis 2040 zu erreichen. Die zunehmende Priorisierung von Maßnahmen der Klimaanpassung spiegelt sich unter anderem im Hitzeaktionsplan (2022) und der Verankerung des Schwammstadtprinzips (2023) wider. Die Stadtnatur ins Zentrum stellen die Ausweisung des Pegnitztal-Ost als Naturschutzgebiet, die Baum- und Waldstrategie (2020) und vor allem die Umsetzung der Biodiversitätsstrategie Nürnberg (2023). Um die Perspektive auf zukünftige Folgen des Klimawandels um den Aspekt der Klimagerechtigkeit zu erweitern, stellt Britta Walthelm Ende 2025 das überarbeitete Stadtklimagutachten vor.
Vor ihrer Tätigkeit als Referentin war die Diplom-Politikwissenschaftlerin in der Stadtratsperiode (2014-2020) stellvertretende Fraktionsvorsitzende der Grünen, fachlich und federführend verantwortlich für den Umweltbereich. Außerdem war sie die stellvertretende Vorsitzende im Umweltausschuss und im Werkausschuss Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb Stadt Nürnberg (ASN). Von 2013 bis 2017 war sie im Landesvorstand Grüne Bayern unter anderem für die strategische Neuausrichtung und organisatorische Professionalisierung des Landesverbands im Hinblick auf die Landtagswahl 2018 mit verantwortlich.
Beruflich war Britta Walthelm vor ihrer Tätigkeit als Referentin als Geschäftsführerin und Referentin in der Jugend- und Erwachsenenbildung mit Fokus auf Nachhaltigkeitsthemen tätig.

Deputy Mayor Councillor for Environment and Health
Britta Walthelm was born and raised in Nuremberg in 1980. After completing her Abitur at the Willstätter Gymnasium, she studied Political Science and Economics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. At the University of Manchester she obtained a Master of Arts in European Politics and Policy. In 2007 she completed her studies at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg as Diplom-Politologin (univ.).
Since May 2020, Britta Walthelm has served as a full-time City Councillor and Referentin for Environment and Health of the City of Nuremberg. In the current legislative period of the City Council, she has concentrated her work on implementing climate protection measures and achieving climate neutrality of the municipal administration, as well as on designing urban green spaces with regard to climate adaptation and the preservation of biological diversity. Her attention has also been directed to strengthening the municipal public health system. Within her area of responsibility she is in charge of the Environmental Office and the Public Health Office, the municipal waste management company, the urban drainage department, and the cemetery administration.
After managing the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic well into 2022, Britta Walthelm was able to realise landmark resolutions in the fields of climate protection and climate adaptation. These include an integrated Climate Protection Concept (2025) to achieve the goal of climate neutrality for the entire city by 2040. The increasing prioritisation of adaptation measures is reflected, among others, in the Heat Action Plan (2022) and the anchoring of the “Sponge City” principle (2023). Placing urban nature at the centre are the designation of the Pegnitztal-Ost as a nature reserve, the Tree and Forest Strategy (2020), and above all the implementation of the Biodiversity Strategy Nuremberg (2023). To broaden the perspective on future consequences of climate change by the aspect of climate justice, Britta Walthelm will present the revised Urban Climate Report at the end of 2025.
Prior to her current role as Referentin, the political scientist served in the City Council term 2014-2020 as Deputy Head of the Green Party group, with professional and lead responsibility for the environment portfolio. Additionally, she was Deputy Chair of the Environment Committee and of the Supervisory Committee of the municipal waste management company (ASN). From 2013 to 2017 she was a member of the state executive board of the Green Party Bavaria, among other responsibilities for the strategic realignment and organisational professionalisation of the state association in view of the 2018 state elections.
Professionally, before her work as Referentin, Britta Walthelm worked as managing director and advisor in youth and adult education with a focus on sustainability topics.
